Names have very special meanings. Also the naming of children in traditional African society is very important. Though it varies from one community to another, we still practice it.
In the African society, children were named after seasons, events, passing on of great people and even after their grandparents or great, great grandparents and this practice is still continuing.
Well, just like any other Kenyan tribe, the Agikuyu community still practice this. I stumbled upon this long list of Kikuyu men names and their meanings but I’m not sure if its true.
People from the mountain, how true is this?
1.Kamau – very cute but kuhanya chini ya maji
2.Kimani – wengi waukua machokoraa
3.Mwangi – have more than one wife/girllfriend
4.Gitau– wuuui mkifika in action, either alale ama aanze za khai kai uhuanaga atia wi nui?
5.Mwaura– wana heart smart sana but kujichocha waachie
6.Njoroge – hawananga kakitu….but maringo za sumni
7.Mugo– responsible and love unconditionally
8.Wainaina– anapenda dem na bado anatamani rafiki ya uyo dem
9.Kariuki – kuwamufala na ugishagi mob.Lakini wako na pesa, kutumia pia hawajui
10.Kuria– look innocent but act so rude
11.Murigi– ici ni ngoma muno…iriaga nginya tucucu
12.Mburu– always with excusses na hawajai kubali makosa
13.Macharia– very loving and make good fathers
14.Chege – kulia hana ndoo kila tym (Vey stingy)
15.Ngugi- kung’oa ndo zao na kubonga mob
16.Maina– aya mathiaga na imera,leo happy the other minute amejam.
17.Waithaka– mang’aa
